Iberdrola Renewables sells output of Arizona wind project
Iberdrola Renewables has announced it has sold the output of a commercial-scale wind power project that is expected to be the first wind project constructed in Arizona. Salt River Project (SRP) has agreed to purchase the entire output from Phase I of the Dry Lake Wind Project. This project will help meet Arizona’s growing demand for electricity. Nationwide, customer demand for wind power is surging as utilities and municipalities add clean, renewable and homegrown power to their supplies. Wind power can serve as a hedge against volatile fossil fuel prices and has proven to be a reliable, lo... [more]
UGI generates electricity using recovered landfill methane gas
Landfill gas is generated during the natural decomposition of solid waste and the byproduct gas is largely comprised of methane, a primary greenhouse gas. Landfill gas was given the highest preference, along with other energy sources such as wind, solar, biomass and low-impact hydro, as an alternative energy by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania when the Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard was enacted into law almost 4 years ago. The legislation requires that within 15 years, 18 percent of the state’s electric power come from alternative energy sources. UGI Corporation has announced that on... [more]
Puget Sound Energy intends to acquire 250 MW of wind power
Puget Sound Energy is pursuing the acquisition of 560 megawatts (MW) of new, long-term electricity supply – including more wind power – from three outside parties. The targeted resources constitute the screened “short list” of more than 30 power-supply bids PSE received from regional energy producers and marketers in response to the utility’s Request for Proposals (RFP) in January. PSE hopes to secure the short-listed resources over the next 12 to 18 months. “These new supplies are designed to help us meet our region’s rising energy demands in a cost-effective, environmentally responsibl... DP&L seeks 38,000 MWh of energy from renewable energy resources by the end of 2009
Dayton Power & Light Company (DP&L) has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for renewable energy resources. “DP&L is taking this initial step to expand our portfolio of generation to include renewable energy resources,” said Paul Barbas, DPL president and chief executive officer. “Our goal, as it has always been, is to act in an environmentally responsible and compliant manner while controlling costs for our customers. Soliciting competitive bids to meet our renewable needs should help drive the development of economically viable renewable alternatives.” In keeping with the recently pas... [more]
