George Bush supports UN to fight climate change
US president George Bush has told the General Assembly he supported a 'strong and vibrant' UN to fight global pandemics, the spread of weapons of mass destruction and climate change.
"As America works with the United Nations to alleviate immediate human needs, we are also coming together to address long-term challenges," Mr Bush told the gathering in a speech ranging from the plight of war-torn nations in the Middle East to the crisis in Burma.
"Together, we are preparing for pandemics that could cause death and suffering on a global scale. Together, we are working to stop the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. And together, we are confronting the challenges of energy security, environmental quality, and climate change," he said.
Mr Bush said the UN should be reformed to better deal with numerous global crises. "The United States is committed to a strong and vibrant United Nations," he said.
