BlueFire Ethanol Fuels, Inc. has been granted a conditional-use permit from the County of Los Angeles, Department of Regional Planning, to permit the construction of the nation’s first commercial facility to convert biowaste into ethanol.
The Los Angeles County Planning Commission approved the use permit for operation of the plant on 10 undeveloped acres near Lancaster, California, in the Antelope Valley. BlueFire plans to initiate commercial operation of the plant in late 2009.

Foster Wheeler Ltd. has announced that a subsidiary of its Global Power Group has been awarded a contract by E.ON Värme Sverige AB, Sweden for a waste-fuel-fired circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) boiler island to be located at the combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Norrkoping, Sweden.

According to Greenpeace reports, “On average, our large, centralised power stations throw away two thirds of the energy they generate... CHP is the most efficient way possible to burn both fossil fuels (usually natural gas) and renewable fuels (including biomass and biogas). Pretty much any organic matter can be used to produce biogas; we could be reaping energy from farm waste, and from all of the organic waste - like uneaten food - that makes up about half of our landfill.”
