Latest Biofuels and biomass News
Biofuel or biodiesel is an alternative fuel made from renewable sources including vegetable oil (such as soy and canola), corn ethanol, sugar-cane ethanol, cellulosic ethanol, recycling cooking oil, algae, or animal fat. Biomass is plants grown to generate electricity or produce biofuels. Biofuels can significantly reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, but they can be energy intensive to produce.
Bio-fuel produced by algae could produce an economically viable, low net carbon emission transportation fuel
Meeting the world’s growing energy needs while reducing the impact on the environment will require the development of all viable sources of energy and new technology development, said Emil Jacobs, Vice President of Research and Development at ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company. In a speech to the 2010 World Future Energy Summit, Jacobs outlined the energy challenge facing the world: global energy demand is expected to be 35 percent hi... [more]
Car powered by Government office wastepaper and waste cardboard
Advanced biofuels can deliver up to 90 percent CO2 emission reduction compared to gasoline and are the most cost-efficient way of reducing CO2 in the transport sector. For the first time in U.S. history, a vehicle fuelled by government office wastepaper and waste cardboard has driven the streets of Washington D.C. Novozymes partnered with Maryland-based Fiberight to provide the demonstration fuel. “The advanced biofuels showcased here demo... [more]
Cyclone Power Technologies secures European patent on its heat regenerative external combustion engine
The European Patent Office has issued a notice to grant Cyclone Power Technologies a patent on its heat regenerative external combustion engine. Cyclone’s invention is a high-efficiency modern steam engine, known as a Schoell Cycle engine, capable of running on virtually any liquid or gaseous fuel, and creating far fewer noxious emissions than comparable internal combustion engines. Two of the many aspects that make Cyclone’s engine unique ar... [more]
Obama's Commitment to Building Advanced Biorefineries Can Create Green Jobs
A recent report commissioned by BIO, U.S. Economic Impact of Advanced Biofuels Production, projects that development of advanced biorefineries could create as many as 29,000 jobs over the next few years. Additional Congressional action is needed to follow through on the Obama administration’s recently announced initiative to rapidly build an integrated value chain for the bioeconomy, create jobs and kick start economic growth. The Biotechnolog... [more]
EKATO side-agitators to aid fermentation at Vivergo Fuels' biorefinery plant
With plant process managers continually under pressure to identify new means of driving costs down, while improving process efficiency, every element of a plant’s equipment is scrutinised to make sure it offers maximum value for money. Investing in effective and affordable equipment is an even greater concern when planning the construction of new plants. Vivergo Fuels will use EKATO side entry agitators in all of their Fermentation Vessels in... [more]
